An Article which Resonates Well With My Learning

I recently read an article written by Jeff Haden entitled "30 Years Ago, Steve Jobs Said 1 Thing Is More Powerful than Technology. It's Even More True Today".

The article includes an extract from a speech Steve Jobs made in 1989 which underlines the importance of human creativity:

"Let's say that--for the same amount of money it takes to build the most powerful computer in the world--you could make 1,000 computers with one-thousandth the power and put them in the hands of 1,000 creative people.
You'll get more out of doing that than out of having one person use the most powerful computer in the world. Because people are inherently creative. They will use tools in ways the toolmakers never thought possible. And once a person figures out how to do something with that tool, he or she can share it with the other 999."

The article highlighted points made in the Catmull reading I read in preparation for week 8. In the article, "How Pixar Fosters Collective Creativity" published in the Harvard Business Review in 2008, the author states "If you give a good idea to a mediocre team, they'll screw it up. But if you give a mediocre idea to a great team, they'll make it work" (Catmull. 2008)

Exercise: Prototyping and Creating Mock-Ups

We were tasked with designing a test-free search page mock-up for individuals who were unable to read. We were first required to create a paper prototype and then use an online tool, Balsamiq. I found the exercise very interesting as it forced me to refine all my ideas into one, single representation. It also involved selecting the most important requirements as we were under a time constraint. I found the paper prototype process slightly easier a using Balsamic introduced constraints, in that I had to create my design choosing from the icons within the Balsamiq tool as opposed to creating my own. I found this exercise very useful and I will aim to introduce quick prototyping in my future roles when applicable.
